    Diesel help needed

    Someone I work with has been told that the turbo in his Jetta TDI needs replacing for the second time , he was quoted by the dealer $2000 for the parts and labor, they said it will take around 4 hours to complete. Taking away the 4 hours of labor makes for a pretty expensive turbo. My question is: Is there somewhere where he can just buy the turbo for less than the $1500 ish or so that the dealer wants for it? He's an aircraft maintenance engineer so doing the work himself isnt an issue its only the cost of the turbo.

    anyone know if bart still has his for sale??? he was selling his for like $500 I think...

      Yeah try to contact Bart is the only suggestion I have. Even if he doesn't have his for sale he may be able to help. He's in poland right now so could be tough to get a hold of.

        ya i sold mine, you can get a new one here for $695US:

        and get maybe someone else besides dealer to install it to save some more $$$.

            Changing the turbo is not all that hard. If you take the intake off (and clean it while you are at it) it is pretty easy. My bet is he doesn't need to change the turbo at all, there is no way a stock TDI should go through more then 1 turbo for the life of the car. It is more then likely just the VNT lever stuck, tell him to reach in behind the engine (when it is cold helps) and feel along the vacuum hose until you reach the end. Right above there is an actuator, press it down and see if it moves freely. If it does and there is no oil leaking inot the intake then the turbo is not the problem. It could even be something as simple as a clogged snow screen of a bad MAF.

              It didnt think that it could be the turbo either, I dont think the dealer took much time to troubleshoot it. Hopefully the fix is easier and cheaper. Thanks alot, I appreciate the help, I'll pass along the advice.

                i agree with stonewall,but what is his sympton lack of power or excessive smoke,
                cel lite on..
                intercooler full of oil..

                  He went to the dealership because of a CEL and they diagnosed it as the turbo. He had it replaced once before under warranty at around 70K, they car currently had around 120k.
