  • 2016 Audi A4 (B9)

    After an endless string of spy shots and various reports, Audi has finally staged the world premiere of the all-new A4 (B9) in both sedan and wagon guises.

    The evolutionary design shouldn’t come as a major surprise as a camo-free prototype was spotted recently showing Audi’s overhauled compact sedan will look sharper compared to its predecessor and will feature a wider singleframe grille and reshaped headlights. It also boasts different LED daytime running lights and a more sloped roofline to enable a sleeker look while the side profile shows a prominent shoulder line and enlarged wheelhouses. The back of the car comes with the traditional Audi taillights with LEDs and there’s a higher boot lid whereas the Avant gets a prominent roof-mounted spoiler.

    Some will say that it looks more like a facelift for the B8 rather than an all-new B9 generation, but the sedan is actually bigger as it’s now 4.73 meters long, 1.84 meters wide and 1.43 meters tall, so it is 25 mm longer, 16 mm wider than the model it replaces while the wheelbase has been stretched by 12 mm to 2.82 meters. In addition, the drag coefficient has been reduced to 0.23 for the sedan and 0.26 for the Avant which in return will cut fuel consumption.

    Despite the very familiar looks, the A4 B9 comes with a considerable weight loss of up to 120 kg (264 lbs) which allows the entry-level sedan with the 1.4 TFSI engine to tip the scales at 1,320 kg (2,910 lbs), not including the driver. Go for the A4 Avant and now the trunk can hold 505 liters of cargo with the rear seats up, representing a 15 liters increase compared to the old model. By folding down the 40:20:40-split rear bench, luggage room increases to 1,510 liters.

    Stepping inside the cabin, it’s more spacious than before as a result of the elongated wheelbase and offers 23 mm additional rear legroom. The driver and passengers will get to enjoy completely redesigned seats, with the ones in front being anatomically-shaped while the head restrains are not only height-adjustable, but also the distance from the head can be modified.

    The interior ambient LED lighting is available in no less than 30 colors while the 12.3-inch fully digital and customizable instrument cluster from the TT and Q7 will be available as optional equipment. The top-spec infotainment system will come with an 8.3-inch tablet-like display with support for voice control, Wi-Fi hotspot. LTE connectivity, Android Auto and CarPlay. There’s also a rear-seat entertainment system with dual 10.1-inch tablets and customers can also order an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system.

    In terms of engines, the Audi A4 Sedan and A4 Avant (B9) will be available with an array of four- and six-cylinder turbocharged gasoline and diesel units, as follows:

    1.4 TFSI: 150 PS (110 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft);
    2.0 TFSI: 190 PS (140 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft); 252 PS (185 kW) and 370 Nm (273 lb-ft);
    2.0 TDI: 150 PS (110 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft); 190 PS (140 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft);
    3.0 TDI: 218 PS (160 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft); 272 PS (200 kW) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft);

    Audi will also be offering an A4 Avant g-tron with a 2.0 TFSI engine developing 170 PS (125 kW) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) which can run on compressed natural gas (CNG). The tanks installed underneath the car can hold 19 kg of gas at a 200-bar pressure and according to Audi gas consumption will stand at less than 4 kg / 100 km while the range on natural gas will be of 500 km (310 miles). When the gas is depleted, a full tank of gasoline will enable an extra 450 km (280 miles) of range.

    The TFSI and four-cylinder TDI engines will work as standard with a newly developed six-speed manual gearbox that is 16 kg (35 lbs) lighter than the old one. All engines (except for the high-end TDI) will be optionally available with a new 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch replacing the old continuously variable multitronic transmission. The 272 PS 3.0 TDI will be offered with an eight-speed tiptronic which has also gone through a series of revisions.

    Audi has announced the A4 Sedan and A4 Avant will go on sale this fall.

            I've always thought A4's look way less attractive in photos, but its when you see them in person or drive them...thats when the love affair begins...haha....just my 3.5c!

              It's not a top of the line sedan like the A6 or A8 but it does have some nice small changes.

              I think it will look killer in black on black!

                It is an evolutionary design of a mass market sedan/wagon so I don't think people should expect too much, plus we all want to see what it looks like lowered with some nice wheels and in RS trim of course too!

                  Latest RS info:

                  Audi just took the wraps off the 2016 A4 but that hasn't stopped Quattro GmbH boss Heinz Hollerweger from revealing new details about the upcoming RS4 Avant.

                  Speaking to Car & Driver, Hollerweger confirmed the model will be "launched relatively early in the production cycle" and it will feature a turbocharged six-cylinder engine that develops more than 420 bhp (313 kW).

                  While Americans were denied the last RS4 Avant, Hollerweger said "The U.S. is changing and there is more demand there [for wagons], so maybe that will change." Even if the RS4 Avant doesn't make it stateside, the executive hinted the next-generation RS5 Sportback could eventually come to America.

                    US Spec info:

                    Preliminary details have emerged concerning the 2017 Audi A4 (US-spec) model programmed to go on sale next March.

                    Initially, the new premium compact sedan from Ingolstadt will be available for U.S. customers with a choice of two engines, the 2.0 TFSI with 252 bhp and 273 lb-ft along with a more economical 2.0 TDI churning 190 bhp and 295 lb-ft. Upon launch, both engines will be teamed up to a seven-speed S tronic transmission sending power to a quattro all-wheel drive system. Later on in the same 2017 model year, a front-wheel drive layout will be added while a six-speed manual gearbox is currently being considered.

                    In terms of standard equipment, the US-bound A4 (B9) will get a standard tri-zone automatic climate control system, 40/40/20 split-folding rear bench and a 7-inch display for the MMI infotainment system, but an upgrade to an 8.3-inch screen will be available at an extra cost. If you go for the latter, Audi USA will also be offering an optional 12.3-inch configurable digital instrument cluster while both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay will be supported.

                    On the outside it will get standard bi-xenon headlights and a generous array of alloy wheel designs in sizes ranging from 17 to 19 inches. Chances of seeing the A4 Avant in U.S. dealerships are slim, but at least the rugged allroad quattro will be there and is going to be followed by the S4 and quite possibly the RS4 Avant with a turbo-six pushing out 420+ bhp.

                        Its a nice looking car. The headlights are bit futuristic but Audi always pushes the envelope and people just adopt to it.
                        The weight savings are great and that dash/navi option is superb. Was there any mention of a manual gearbox? I think its only a matter of time for manufacturers to completely phase out manual gearboxes in favour of fuel economy of 8-9 speed automatics

                          It says the manual is still under consideration for North America; sales of manuals are so low now in the US (~4%) I am sure the business case is not too positive for manual sales, but it would be nice to keep it as a special order option. I would think Europe will still have the choice, for now at least.

                            rs4 will probably be 460hp, since rs3 is 360 and rs6 is 560, if they make it 420hp meh

                              Audi has already stated that it will be more than the current 450hp that is in the RS5... so 460hp sounds about right to me.
