My 05' GLI just died in the Chinook parkade ... security and other drivers pushed me up the ramp and into an empty spot... whew

So I scanned for codes and the engine speed sensor came up... anyone know where I can get one this weekend? Or have any other fix ideas?

Oh no, this is the exact problem I started having on my gli, it's been nothing but problems.

Youch, the car has been great so far... hopefully this doesn't continue. Thanks a lot for the offer, I've got some basic tools in my car so I think I can change it out no prob... and then I imagine it'll be Monday before I can get a new one hey?

Make sure anything valuable is in the trunk. Tons.. TONS of theft in that parkade.

Smart to move valuables into the trunk. I went out to give it another try and she fired up so I drove home! Not sure what to think but here are the scan results...

3 Faults Found:

16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0300 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16685 - Cylinder 1: Misfire Detected
P0301 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal
P0322 - 35-00 - -

BTW: The sensor offer is greatly appreciated. I may not need it but if you guys are in need sometime, I carry cables and a socket set with me all the time... VCDS part of the time... 836.3236

It's the speed sensor, it's not "really" needed to get the engine running, hence why you got it home in limp mode. Replace it and you're good.

Actually, it's crucial in order for the car to run or start. Ask me how I know. As a matter of fact ask Graeme as well.

That looks like the code set I have been throwing..... My research has lead to the question, how old is your battery? I know it's weird but from all the research I have seen regarding problems like this seem to be fixed with a replacement battery....

Were you encountering any weird behavior of your car prior to it just dying? Catching a paragraph I missed before, have you ever had it like buck on you while highway driving?

The ride home was business as usual, funny enough. I've got a family dinner out of town today so we'll see how/if she starts/runs.

Battery and coils were replaced last winter. They went after boosting my bro's coupe... they were prob on the way out already.

Only weird behaviour was about a month ago when I was getting boost/missfire/rev problems. Turned out to be a plastic piece, under the intake mani, that holds vacuum. It was replaced and up until yesterday everything's been great.

I'll see what happens today and post when I get home.

So I made to and from Red Deer today with no problems. Started and shut off the car several times today... don't know what to say... happy it's running perfectly but not sure exactly what the original problem was or if it will happen again. Hmm... as noted above, "seems like there is a short somewhere in the system".

The question is: Does the speed sensor catastrophically fail or does it just slowly crap out?

What does VW recommend as the first course of action?

Hey, I had that same problem you had a month ago... It was a little black and green check valve that broke. What a pain in the ass the change. I was in bc when it happen(on the ferry back from the island) ended up bungie cording it up so it would work haha.

If the fix isn't too much money I would fix it. I guess you still had to find the problem. Hope you do.

It's right under the I take manifold. You can hardly see it let along your your hands/fingers near it. Took the whole intake off. Seemed to be the easiest thing to do..might be an easier way idk. You need one? I got the part number kicking around somewhere.

P.s my response was for post#10. The misfiring and such.
