i dropped the car by george who welded in a new bracket and shes back to normal, still waiting on a response from germany as i received and email today saying it had been passed on to the appropriate people so i am interested to hear what they say

that's BS as that is a total safety issue. Who cares what side of the boarder it was bought on. If the car has never been in an accident in any way IMO VW can fix this

Spoke again to the canadain VW supervisor who again said the car was out of warranty and thus out of her hand. She did however give me the contact info of someone in germany she said could possibly help. Anxiously awaiting a response from them and I will keep you posted.

I think I might begin to mention that you are considering talking with a lawyer and/or a consumer advocate at a news station as this is indeed a serious safety issue and their lack of concern is not acceptable.

^^^Fully agree with Pat here. I just recently got my coilpacks changed out by VW as a recall item and its an 8 year old car. Nobody is going to die from a defective coilpack causing a small misfire. For something that could mean life or death if it malfunctions at the wrong time, I would hope someone in VW would take the time to care!

Yes, general wear and tear items do break, and thats why we have service intervals. I dont believe a seat frame is a wear and tear item.

Manufacturers have recalls on thousands of cars that are over 10 years old at times, sometimes for even minor problems... This could be a potential issue with more than just this one R32 and should be addressed

No offence, but if I worked for VW I wouldn't car either. The car was imported, the car is old, and who knows what history it has had. That's just my opinion on the subject, and not personal in any way. I just think that cars wear out, parts break, it is to be expected with age and use.

Update;

so after being contacted by the Canadian VW supervisor she told me that since the car was an american car I would need to contact VW of America in regards to this. After contacting them i was told from Vw of A that since the car was imported up to Canada that it was no longer their car and would be handled by the supervisor at VW of Can. ARGGhhhh Farkking rediculous I tell you. Aparently the VW of Can supervisor will be back in touch with me shortly. Im really starting to get pissed off, I run my own business and if something like this ever happens i handle it, hopefully they put me in touch with some VW person who can help out, seems like i am talking to a bunch of people who really dont give a crap.

Agreed. And not saying that i would get it welded myself, i would definitely try and get it replaced but it is a decent meantime fix it was necessary

This needs to be dealt with/repaired by VW. Completely unacceptable for something like this to happen.

It broke because you leaned back in your seat. It probably would have failed in an accident years ago.

So I just went outside to check the owners manuals and I did find the information in my moms MK5 manual. There is one whole page dedicated to reporting safety defects, instructions are to contact Volkswagen of Canada, and possibly get in touch with Transport Canada (their number was given, 1-800-333-0510).

edit: there is NO statement on that page which mandates that the vehicle must be under warranty for a safety defect to be reported etc.

Very interested to hear what happens.

Not only his life but the safety of all other motorists/people on the road. A seat shearing off its base while the vehicle is being operated isn't something minor. The issue should be documented in detail and should be directed to the appropriate people (ie: VW USA/Canada) so that it can be further investigated. There is a specific phone number in the owners manual which deals with these types of situations (don't have it on me, but start with 1-800-822-8987)

Rather disappointed with SCFC's lame response.

Thanks for the phone number, I called and spoke to a lady who said once the warranty is up its the responsibility of the owner blah blah blah. I asked for someone higher up so her manager will be contacting me shortly and hopefully he can help resolve this isssue or give me the name of someone who can. Im a little put off by the responses of all the VW people i have talked to so far at SCFC and this lady I was just on the phone with. It sounds like people could care less and they dont want to do any work or help resolve an issue. Hopefully I will be talking to someone soon whos takes their work seriously and who can help. I will keep you guys posted on the progess.

The problem with a stamped steel bracket like that is on the seat is the metals structure is altered by being stamped and stretched making it weaker. Then it has to go through the same repeated stress everytime the car is accelerated or decelerated. This causes a stress crack/break such as this it is a engineering issue with the seat not something that should be delt with by warrenty anyways. This is the type of defect that manufactures get sued over so do not touch it or get it welded. Make VW replace both seats it is not something they can refuse.
