  • 2006 Jetta TDI - Error Code P0101

    Hi All,
My sister's 2006 MK5 TDI is occasionally throwing error code P0101 relating to the MAF. I've started with easy stuff. I cleaned the MAF with some MAF cleaner, checked the air filter, did a pretty quick check for leaks on the easy to get at portions of the intake. All I found so far was that the air hose was pretty loose at the intake side of the turbo, so I tightened that up and cleared the code today. I don't know if it would have been significant enough to be the issue though.

I'm reading that there are several things that can cause the code including a bad MAF, clogged intake and worn cam lobes.

So far we are not noticing any drastic performance issues.

Any thoughts or experience with this? Also, can I pop off the valve cover and check out the cam lobes without needing a new valve cover gasket?

I'm not really sure what the logical next step is. I don't want to start replacing parts without a good reason.

    Thanks!
    Stefan

First thing to check is the cable to MAF plugged in correctly? Are any of the wires damaged?

Usually cleaning the MAF sensor on the TDI doesn't work. I'd get a new one possibly.

Sounds like you've checked everything, and checking the cam lobes, you can get away with out replacing the gasket, but I believe there a sequential order when re-torquing it. This might help.

The gasket normally doesn't need to be replaced, however if it is the original one or an aftermarket it will likely be too brittle from over the years to squish down and re-seal.

          Here is some info -http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/16485/P0101/000257

Can also check flow via vagcom -
Coolant temp needs to be 80C
          @ Idle should read 2.00 – 5.00g/sec

Additionally can also do some voltage and Ohm readings on the sensor itself

Thanks guys. I have some things to look at. Worried that the camshaft is probable based on high mileage of the car... not the cheapest fix!

I did a bhw cam a couple months ago on a passat I picked up for dirt cheap. Not a hard job to do I found, but with the passat the engine was 90 degree's in the other direction.

If you do this yourself, talk to Natty, I bought everything local(Not dealer, through an account I have access to with a wholesaler) and it was way cheaper to do it that way. I also didn't pull the tandem fuel pump as there was a way not to touch it and since it didn't leak before didn't feel like giving it a reason.

I was looking at rough pricing on ECS.

I see they have the regular and the complete kit. Any thoughts on what is needed and what you can get away without doing? Valve cover is one I see that I could probably save.

check out IDparts as well for better shipping at least. I order most of my maintenance stuff from them.

Ya, Natty, George at Tunedub and BaggedGLI have helped me with parts in the past. I'd stick with the local guys. I just like ECS for their website .

Oh that BRM camshaft was the same one listed for the BHW, BEW camshaft are cheaper and fit, but you will loose 5-10% power they say.
