Re: 2006 Jetta TDI - Error Code P0101

I started trying to diagnose today. Unfortunately, I didn't get my hands on a CAN-BUS cable yet, but I went ahead to look at other things.

    Valve cover off:

Check EGR - looks good. the line from the exhaust is a bit plugged up, but the air way is wide open.

Looking in to the intake, it is a bit grungy, but looks open too.

    Camshaft is not great though:

Zoom in on that and you can see the wear. Look down the factory chamfered edge and it dissapears. Also, from the bits of lifters I can see, I think there is some dishing. Cam lobe edges are sharp too, indicating wear.

Although I didn't check the MAF with a scan tool, I think this is likely the issue.

Any reason not to buy this brand?
      https://www.amazon.ca/Audi-Diesel-En...rds=Tdi+timing

Concept1 has camshaft sprocket counterhold and puller tool, but is sold out on the timing tool. I figured this one should do. Thoughts?

Re: 2006 Jetta TDI - Error Code P0101

Not much done today. I read a lot of how-to info, and watched some youtubes. I got the fender liner out to expose the crank, pulled off the serpentine and the crank pulley. Spun the crank to get a better look at things. Lobes at cylender 1 and 4 are the worst, as seems to be the common case. Benjamin was kind enough to loan me some tools and advise but unfortunately, the crank lock he had was not compatible. I'll be looking for the lock tool this week, and then will carry on with the dismantelling. Feeling a little more confident about the task now at least!

          Results are in!

          Here are the lifters!

          Some severe wear:

I think the rockers are re-usable:

Although there is one with a slight score. Hoping it will not be an issue.

I'll have to confirm. I'm pretty sure that for most of it's life it was either dealer serviced, or serviced by a local guy in Invermere who is pretty knowledgeable with TDIs.

What kind of mileage are we talking about with this amount of wear?

Have seen them as low as 90,000km at the shop when proper oil was not used.

Stefan, I can get you all the goodies you need to get it back up and running, give me a shout.

Correction - 310,000km on this car.

Also, ordered the latest metalnerd crank lock tool. Should fit most TDIs if others need it in the future....

The Passat that I did a few months ago had 309000 km's on the clock, can't say which oil was used though.

Coolant drained for water pump replacement. Cleaned up the head and parts that are being reinstalled. Thats about it for today.

Got some quotes on parts and ordered them this afternoon. Parts are all in and I'll be picking them up tomorrow morning!

Project for another day, but does anyone have used suspension laying around that would fit this car? I think the stuff on it is original, and tired.
