Re: While I'm In There... 1990 Coupe quattro Refurb
Having the HPR mounts means I have everything I need to refurb the subframes, so might as well get busy.
My spare front subframe is mostly prepped and good to go. I'll have to find some time to get the outer seam welded. And do the same to the rear. Pretty impressed that Audi plug welded these frames from factory way back in the day.
I used a wire wheel to buff clean the metal's surface of any rust, paint or road grime. Then, using the STT process I stitch welded the seams together. I followed up with an abrasive disc on the grinder and smoothed out the welds.

Basically everything in the rear except for the differential is coming out for new parts. I'll keep the good old parts for spares.

Thanks to Jared @ HPR for the killer deal on some choice products. Looking forward to some stickers too.

Re: While I'm In There... 1990 Coupe quattro Refurb
I'm so close I can taste it.
Unfortunately my proposed date from Winter 2013 to my builder of late spring 2014 didn't come to pass; I'm actually still waiting on my crate full of carbon fibre hood, fully built/zero-balaned stroker motor, turbo, manifolds, fueling and ECU, etc.
Some parts are on their way to Swain Tech. for White Lightning coating (IE. exhaust manifold, down pipe, turbo hot side). When they get back to Hank at IrozMotorsport in Las Vegas, everything is scheduled to be sent north.
I might as well get the car prepped and ready.
This will be a fairly ambitious phase, but will also close out the final phase of v1 on my build.
My punch list while I wait includes:
-- Install CGR/01E, 4kq propshaft and axle flanges, 034 centre bearing, new axles, JHM shifter
-- Swap front subframe with new/refurbed everything
-- Swap rear B5S4 calipers for D2A8, install Wilwood prop. valve, B490 vac assist swap
-- Drop rear subframe to seam weld and paint, install new tie rods, bushings, billet diff mount, etc.
-- Install KW v3 coilovers, Sachs top mounts and VAP MS1's
-- Pull ecu and harness in prep for VEMS
-- Eliminate redundant parts in the engine bay, like the carbon canister and distributor driver, etc.
-- Source Mercedes steering damper (a la FunkWeasel's build thread on MG) to replace while bay is empty
Have the 01A sold to Nate aka BlakMarketClash, so that was first on the list.

Parts update!
KW v3 coilovers have arrived:

Also included in latest parts orders:
-- 034 Strut top mounts: street density
-- 034 Billet aluminum subframe bushings: front (adj.), rear
-- 034 Delrin control arm bushings: front, rear
-- 034 tie rods: front (chromolly), rear
-- 034 wheel stud kit (x20)
-- JHM solid shift kit
-- OEM S2 coupe 6sp. shift linkage
-- Kamei grille
Just need a few more parts, and should be ready for a full suspension and drivetrain refurb. Will try to do vacuum brake assist swap at the same time.
Big thanks to Jordan at Jerbel Autowerks for the help out dealing with 034 and KW on the parts order. He smoothed over the need for strut housings being sent to KW, and kept both JHM & 034 to task on orders' timeline & price for me while I was working away from the grid.Last edited by PRY4SNO; 09-22-2012, 10:37 PM.

Yeah, that'll teach me for letting down my guard. Haha. Hopefully I've paid enough dues for a while now and can complete the next phase relatively hassle free.Originally posted by All_Euro View PostToo smooth of a transaction = flat tire on the way home... just to liven things up
Nope, I'm away at work! Good to know there's a local doppelgänger, I'll have to keep my eyes peeled.Originally posted by bitskyline View Postsaw a black coupe today in Leduc by the Sobeys could it have been you ?

There was one in Calgary I posted on the kijiji sticky thread a week or two ago. If you don't mind importing one from the US, Motorgeek usually has one or two floating around on the classifieds. That's a good place to pick up someone's abandoned project.
Case in point, one of the cleanest OEM+ S2 conversions I've ever seen is now (sadly) for sale:

Not much new to report with Sabine, other than she now has an organ donor

Big thanks to Kyle (Smarty39) for his patience with me to get down south with a truck and trailer. He was solid to work with from start to finish on the deal, which started with a feeler via PM, lead up to a viewing with a tentative interest and held on word for a few months, and culminated with a fair price offered and accepted with no haggling. Not to mention he let me pillage the parts car ('91 Audi 90s sedan) to my heart's content. I managed to grab every relay in the car and a bunch of hardware, plus some odds and sods for spare parts.
Only things I left were:
-- brake master cylinder & vacuum booster, PS pump & return hose (Vac. brake booster conversion parts)
-- front fenders, hood support (B4 front conversion parts)
Come to think of it, the fact nobody threatened to sue makes this transaction rather boring.

Ok on the comparison shot those where wore down rather low. You should have a more stable voltage and current now as the gap will be more consistent with vibration etc. Glad to hear it all worked out.

New (used) voltage regulator and brushes are installed, she fires right up and pulls more smoothly than before! Idle is even improved.
