    Re: Garage Build

i have a height restriction caveat on title. standard totem kit pretty much maxes it out. will probably already be a little over with the 6" curb walls.

Garage will be 2x6 insulated, so if someone wants to trench in gas and heat it full time, they can. Going electric heat for now due to budget mostly, and I will not be heating it full time. Its not a big deal to run in a gas line later.

have quote for concrete at home. can post it later.

Don't go with an electric heater run natural gas it's worth it.
Go with at least 60 amp service.
9 foot walls including the 1 foot pony wall around and an 8 foot door.Don't get cheap on height.
Come an take a look at mine. 24x28 and i still can't get a car in.
The trusses are a work of art.

Um I don't think you can put water to the separated garage because then it qualifies as a second living space. Sounds stupid I know, but I have a buddy that just bought a house with a massive garage out back and the previous owner tried running water but bylaw would not allow it.

Do the floor from the start, it will keep the cement looking good, especially when a little of that black used diesel oil gets on the ground. How do I know, well I just moved into my new house and did the floor with one of those epoxy kits. I accidentally dumped 3 liters of old diesel oil on the floor all over the place. A bunch of rags later and a little dish soap to do the finishing touches and you would never know the oil touched the ground.

Plywood might look like **** but so does holes and chips in in drywall from constant abuse. This one is preference here, I see this as a garage and storage area that will be subject to lots of work and abuse. This is a personal preference here and everybody does different things in their garage so pick what suits you.

Good luck with the build though and keep us up to date.

    Ben

stripped all the lumber from fence and shed of nails, separated the re-usable from the crap. Pulled out the sidewalk blocks that were in the way. Bobcat tentatively scheduled for Friday.

I wouldn't do the plywood, it just looks like ass. I would do like I am doing and putting the recessed box in the ceiling with a reel of hose and a reel of electrical cord. I am also doing built in hosing for air which is pretty easy to do.

Water would be a bugger to insulate, don't think I will add that.

I am going 220 and 30 amp w/ secondary panel. I'll probably throw up an electric heater, and it will need it.

    Hoist will have to wait...

For inside, nothing too fancy. Probably do the bottom 4 feet in plywood, and the rest in drywall. Will be a good bash guard. I might do a coating on the floor to avoid staining. Will make sure the lighting is good, and throw in a work bench, but that's all for the moment. We'll see how far over budget I am when the framing is done....

Got the shed down tonight (too dark for pic). Sweet jebus there were a lot of nails! like ever 2 inches or less on the OSB, and doubled up in the corners. Here I was thinking I could make use of the materials somewhere in the garage, but most of it was destroyed by the time I made it through the nails. Such a pain. Pretty sure whoever built is picked up a new air nailer and was pretty excited about it.

A small secondary panel in the garage is best, also run 220

Put in extra electrics on their own breakers while you've got it framed. I blow mine all the time with my header and compressor. Also a drain in the floor is awesome (I have one) but not sure if you can run water lines out there since it's detached.

    started a topic Garage Build

    Garage Build

Not going to be a very exciting garage, but I thought I'd post my progress. Maybe it will give me incentive to get it done faster

Got my permit last week and took the fences down this afternoon. Also had to emty the contents of the shed, cause it has to go. That was probably the worst part.

Working...
