I think someone made that call to cheat, someone else approved the call. Those people should have known better. Other engineers and managers have no way of knowing and it's a poor decision to remove them.

According to the lawsuit filed in the United States District Court of Northern California, Volkswagen of America launched a "high-profile marketing campaign" that targeted environmentally-conscious consumers with claims that the company's “Clean Diesel” vehicles had low emissions. The lawsuit says this was deceptive as the company's diesel-powered models actually had nitrogen oxide emissions that were up to 4,000 percent higher than legally allowed.

The FTC alleges the deception went on for a seven-year period in which Volkswagen convinced consumers to buy or lease more than 550,000 diesel-powered vehicles. The agency also notes Volkswagen claimed the models would have a high resale value but "hidden defeat devices will significantly reduce the vehicles’ resale value."

The lawsuit is asking the court to require Volkswagen to compensate consumers who bought or leased an affected vehicle between late 2008 and late 2015. The FTC lawsuit was filed on behalf of owners who drive TDI versions of the Jetta, Passat, and Touareg as well as all Audi vehicles equipped with a TDI engine.

The Dieselgate saga shows no signs of slowing down as Volkswagen has suffered yet another setback.

According to reports of Germany, the company's recall has been delayed as the fix is reportedly increasing fuel consumption on Passat models. When Automotive News Europe inquired about the delay, the automaker confirmed the recall has been temporarily halted but dismissed claims of increased fuel consumption as "speculation."

The unnamed spokesperson went on to say authorities are still investigating whether or not the Dieselgate fix causes an increase in fuel consumption. As they noted, "We have to guarantee that noise and especially CO2 emissions are exactly the same as before the fix."

The Germany Federal Motor Transport Authority was expected to have its investigation completed by March 27th but it appears the agency needed additional time. However, it now appears a determination will be made by the end of this week or next week.

When the agency signs off on the fix, Volkswagen will resume fixing affected Passat models before moving to on to other vehicles including the Audi A4 and A5 as well as the Skoda Superb. The process will continue for the foreseeable future as Volkswagen will recall about 2.5 million vehicles in Germany before recalling models in the rest of Europe.

That would imply there is actually a fix at least. The bought back cars could, in theory, be resold.

Two more months to wait until we hear details on June 21. What to do, what to do? One option is to see what the buyout offer will be and pick up a Q3. It would be the "practical" family friendly thing to do. The other option is to continue my conversation on finding a possible deal on an R. Perhaps less practical, but more? cargo space and, well, it's an R! Do I go with the practical option, or the more "selfish " one?

If this happens, it will probably spell the end of diesel engined passenger cars.

The bad news--at least for automakers--is that the U.K. government is in the process of implementing new, real-world emissions tests for new cars. Those tests are expected to roll out next year

The messy diesel scandal at the Volkswagen Group is far from being over, but at least now we know VW is almost ready to introduce a remedy for the Audi-developed 3.0-liter V6 TDI engine. We should point out the fix involves installing a new catalytic converter on approximately 85,000 VW, Audi, and Porsche vehicles sold in United States.

Affected by what will be a recall are going to be models such as the Touareg, A6, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, and the Cayenne. All of these models are equipped with a so-called “defeat device” which refers to illegal software that sets up a timer to manage the exhaust-cleaning system’s temperatures. The special software kicks in only when the cars are undergoing an emission test, so in real-world driving the vehicles pollute more.

It was back in February when a recall plan was proposed for cars with the turbodiesel six-cylinder engine, but Volkswagen of America and U.S. regulators came to an agreement to focus instead on the smaller engines that power around 480,000 cars. VoA is facing a June 21 deadline in United States to sort out an agreement whether to repair or buy back 2.0 TDI-powered cars.

The VW Group needs money to handle the Dieselgate which is why some projects are either being postponed or axed. That’s why the second-gen Phaeton has been pushed back until towards the end of the decade, while a production-ready Golf R400 is unlikely to happen.

A United States Federal Court judge says that Volkswagen, government regulators, and owner representatives are on schedule for June 21 to complete the final settlements over the automaker's emissions cheating. The agreements will then need to complete a public comment period, which will push judicial approval for them back until at least July 26, Reuters reports. By that time, it will be over 10 months since the Environmental Protection Agency’s original violation notice against VW’s polluting 2.0-liter diesel engines last September.

"Volkswagen is pleased that we continue to make progress in our discussions with U.S. government agencies, regulators and the Plaintiffs' Steering Committee, and is working to finalize the agreements in principle, as directed by the Court,” the automaker said in a statement.

VW reached the framework for the settlement with government regulators in April. The company agreed to fix or buy back the 482,000 polluting vehicles in the U.S. with the brand’s 2.0-liter diesel engine. In addition, the deal would give financial compensation to all affected owners, and there would be an environmental fund because of the powerplants’ damage to the planet. Plus, the automaker would still owe fines to the Feds for cheating on emissions tests. The campaigns could cost VW billions of dollars.

These settlements only cover the 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel. VW still has to work out a fix for the emissions issues with the 3.0-liter V6, but the repair might be nearly ready. “We also continue to work expeditiously on an approved solution for 3.0L V6 engine TDI vehicles,” the company said in its statement.
